Gems heading to camp before u19 world titles

BASKETBALL Australia has named the 22-player women’s under-19 squad going off to camp ahead of a tour of China in April and the 2013 FIBA Under 19 Women’s World Championships in July.

Under the watchful eye of Australian Gems coach Cheryl Chambers, the squad will be in camp from March 13-16 at the Basketball Australia National Centre of Excellence at the AIS, Canberra.

Described as “an ultra-talented squad”, it includes some of the rising stars of the WNBL competition, including 2012 Betty Watson WNBL Rookie of the Year Carley Mijovic, from the Dandenong Rangers.

Casey Samuels (Canberra Capitals), Darcee Garbin (West Coast Waves) and Stephanie Talbot (Adelaide Lightning) are also included.

The Australian Gems will contest the under-19 world titles in Lithuania from July 18-28, and, drawn in Group B, they will clash with Argentina, Japan and European powerhouse Spain in the preliminary rounds.
