Courtney tops field at national track championships
- Updated: March 11, 2013
FOLLOWING a haul of four gold medals, Victoria’s Courtney Field was crowned Champion of Champions at the 2013 Cycling Australia Track Junior National Championships in Adelaide.
The 15-year-old dominated in the women’s under-17 category at the Adelaide Superdome in Gepps Cross, winning national titles on each of the four nights of competition.
Field’s first victory came in the 500m time trial final on Wednesday in a time of 36.590 sec, finishing ahead of Bridget Mullany, of New South Wales, who recorded a time of 37.698 seconds.
Field then won the flying 200m sprint on Thursday night, again ahead from Mullany, and in the process, broke Kerrie Meares’ 16-year-old Australia record time of 12.160 seconds by crossing the finishing line in 12.063 seconds.
“I like to work towards records, and I saw this one when I moved into the under 17 category,” Field told the Cycling Australia website. “It’s an emotional achievement as I have always admired Kerrie Meares and I’m feeling quite humble.”
Gold kept flowing on Friday night for Field when she teamed with Brook Ramshaw to win the team sprint in a time of 36.969 seconds, from the West Australian pair of Niken Jeffries and Tahlay Christie (37.636 seconds).
Field finally secured her fourth gold medal in the scratch race final on Saturday, completing the 5km journey in 6 minutes 37 seconds, with Mullany again having to settle for the silver.
New South Wales’ Cameron Scott, meanwhile, was the star in the men’s under-17 category, winning three gold medals, by claiming the scratch, time trial and sprint titles.
Scott beat Victoria’s Caiden Hull in 7.5km scratch final in a time 8 minutes 58 seconds, after earlier winning the sprint final from NSW teammate Christopher Bryan, and the time trial from Victoria’s Gary Ramshaw.
