SOUTH Australia’s Sturt Sabres and Victoria’s Bulleen Boomers have been crowned the best under-14 basketball teams in the country.

Playing in the national club championships at the Scholastic Stadium in Gosford, the Boomers crushed the Manly Sea Eagles 50-27 in the girls’ final, while Sabres won a thriller against Keilor Thunder 39-37.

The Boomers were on target, downing six three-pointers, with Gemma Potter leading the scoring with 12 points and Erin Riley chipping in with 10.

Elles Van Der Maas led the way for the Sea Eagles with nine, backed by Catriona Henderson with eight.

The Boomers scored the first nine points of the match and had extended their lead to 32-10 by half-time.

The Knox Raiders beat Canberra Capitals 43-33 in the playoff for the bronze medal.

In a see-sawing boys’ final, Sturt had had led 21-16 at the half before being down 30-33 with under a minute to go.

It took some magic from Joel Dyer – three three-pointers in the dying seconds – for the Sabres to clinch the title.

Sebastian Griffin had earlier down 17 points for the winners, while Dale Foreman matched that effort with 17 of his own for the Thunder.

The Cairns Marlins beat the Melbourne Tigers 42-30 to win the bronze medal.
