QUEENSLAND’S boys and girls teams have been crowned the School Sport Australia 12 and Under National Champions after both remained undefeated throughout the entire tournament.
Playing in Canberra. the girls broke a near 10-year drought in claiming their title, while the boys earned themselves their third championship in as many years.
The playoff for the girls’ Grahame Barrett Shield saw competition favourite Queensland take on a competitive Victoria.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, Victoria got off to a strong start, cruising to 2-70, before a collapse which saw it lose its last eight wickets for just 16 runs.
Gabby Lockwood was the pick of the bowlers, taking 2-9 from seven overs.
Queensland had little trouble in chasing down the total, with seven wickets in hand, opening Summer-Rose Briskey setting up the successful run chase with a top score of 28.
The boys reclaimed the the Ricky Ponting Cup by defeating the ACT in the grand final by 108 runs.
Winning the toss and electing to bat, Queensland got off to a sluggish start, finding themselves 3/35 after 20 overs.
Enter captain Hugh Weibgen and Noah Emmerson, who lifted the team’s run rate and laying the platform for a competitive score 187 after knocking up 58 and 63 runs, respectively.
It would prove too great for the ACT after a promising start with the bat, all out for just 79, Tom Sippel the main destroyer with the ball for the winners, taking 4-9.
