Long squad named for world track championships
- Updated: March 27, 2017
CYCLING Australia has announced the Australian ‘Long Squad’ for the 2017 UCI Junior Track World Championships to be held 23-27 August in China.
The strong 21-member squad was finalised after the 2017 Cycling Australia Track National Championships held in early March at the Anna Meares Velodrome in Brisbane.
The squad includes Queensland’s Lara Tucker (QLD) who launched herself into nationals folklore with a four-gold medal haul and the Champion of Champions award in the under 19 category. Tucker completed a clean sweep of the under 19 women’s sprints with gold in the sprint, keirin, 500m time trial and team sprint.
Recently crowned national champions Brooklyn Vonderwall (SA), Alice Culling (VIC), Morgan Gillon (TAS), Skye Robson (QLD) and Alexandra Martin-Wallace (QLD) also feature in the women’s selections.
Godfrey Slattery’s (VIC) stunning triple gold medal performance in Brisbane showed his prowess by claiming team pursuit, Madison and individual pursuit gold.
Dual gold medallists Matthew Richardson (WA), Isaac Buckell (VIC) and Braden O’Shea (SA) have been named, in addition to Kye Bonser (WA), James Brister (SA), Cooper Sayers (SA) and Riley Hart (VIC) and who also claimed gold in Brisbane.
The final Australian team will be announced by Cycling Australia on June 21.
The Australian Commonwealth Games Association’s Gold Coast GOLD 2018 Team Preparation program will help to ensure that Cycling Australia’s cyclists receive the best access to training and competition opportunities, equipment and world-class athlete support services in the lead up to the Games.
