Aussie U19s on a high ahead of six-match series
- Updated: April 4, 2017
Australia’s Under 19s squad has arrived in Hobart, ahead of its six-match series against Sri Lanka Under 19s starting on Saturday.
The series commences with a three-day match, followed by five one-day matches, all being played at Kingston Twin Ovals.
Among the talent on show in the Australia Under 19s squad is NSW Blues rookie Jason Sangha and Victorian all-rounder Will Sutherland, who both represented the Cricket Australia XI against Pakistan earlier this year, plus Queensland Bulls rookie Max Bryant and emerging South Australian spinner Lloyd Pope.
The squad came together for a bonding session today with a climb at Hobart’s Mt Wellington, and training will ramp up for the group tomorrow ahead of the series opener.
“We had a team building exercise this morning, we’ve climbed to Mt Wellington … pretty good views from up here,” wicket-keeper Lewin Maladay said.
At 19, the NSW gloveman is the oldest in the squad, with selectors having one eye on next year’s Under-19 World Cup.
“It’s obviously a very exciting opportunity,” Maladay said
“Being my last year in under-19s I wasn’t sure if I’d get an opportunity with the World Cup next year. They’ve picked a very young squad.
“But I’m honoured to be a part of it and look forward to showcasing my skills and be a leader of the group
“It’s obviously a very talented side.”
Maladay admitted he didn’t know alot about the visiting Sri Lankans, but has received some inside knowledge.
“They’ve just played a Tasmanian XI side and I’ve got a few mates in that team, so I’ve got a few little inside tips from them and we’ll take them into the game,” he said.
